Toll changes in logistics: Why is it important to stay up to date?

Legal innovations and their effects

In the logistics industry, legal innovations, regulations, adjustments and changes to fees and customs duties are the order of the day. These changes not only affect large logistics companies, but also small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In order to remain competitive and avoid unnecessary costs, it is crucial to always be informed about the latest toll regulations.

Tolling system in Europe

Tolls are payable in 26 European countries, most of which have their own toll system. A distinction is made here between vignettes and distance-based tolls.

Vignettes are time-based flat-rate charges for the use of certain roads and are mandatory in countries such as Bulgaria, France, Romania, the Republic of Moldova, Switzerland, Slovenia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary.

Route-dependent tolls are subject to charges in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Poland, Croatia, Greece, Great Britain, Norway, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Turkey and Belarus/Belarus. Common toll system - Eurovignette.

The Eurovignette joint toll system

In the Netherlands, Sweden and Luxembourg, the Eurovignette is mandatory for certain vehicle classes. The tariff structure of the Eurovignette has been adjusted since 25.03.2025: In future, charges will be based on the CO2 emission class and the number of axles of the vehicle.  Heavy commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 12 tons or more. These vehicles require a valid Eurovignette before using freeways and certain expressways.

Competitive advantage through up-to-date information

Toll regulations - and above all their prices - change regularly. Keeping an overview and reacting quickly to changes gives you a real competitive advantage in this dynamic industry. For logistics and forwarding companies, this means that those who know toll costs early on can reliably include them in their calculations and avoid unexpected charges. Especially in the logistics sector, which is constantly evolving, a transparent overview of charges is crucial.
